John,
  As you suggested, I created the .bashrc file in my home directory,
then started VMD, then ran the puts "$env(VMDMSMSUSEFILE)" command, but
VMD doesn't see the environment variable. It says:
  can't read "env(VMDMSMSUSEFILE)": no such variable
