I can confirm that it's quite easy to install the original nvidia driver,
just download the *.run file from the nvidia website, then as root:

runlevel 3
#uninstall other driver <- no idea how to uninstall the gallum O_o sry
chmod +x whatever.run
./whatever.run

In order to have VMD with full GLSL support you need to confirm the question
about installing the 32-bit compatibility opengl libs.
