This worked for me as well, though I am running Debian linux with the
following packages

ii xlibmesa3-gl 4.2.1-11 Mesa 3D graphics library [XFree86]
ii xlibmesa3-glu 4.2.1-11 Mesa OpenGL utility library [XFree86]

Info) VMD for LINUX, version 1.8.1 (June 15, 2003)
Info) Multithreading available, 1 CPU detected.
Info) OpenGL renderer: Mesa GLX Indirect

My /etc/X11/XF86Config says

Section "Module"
        Load "GLcore"
        Load "glx"
[.. other stuff omitted ..]
EndSection

In particular I think you should not load a dri module (comment it out
with `#').

You could also try to start up vmd as

  vmd -dispdev text

if you just want to see it start up (it does not do graphics detection
then though).

Good luck,
Oliver
