Miguel,
  Ok, that answers my question, it looks like there's something wrong
with the libGLU.so.1 library on your Linux machine, based on the startup
failure message. I'm not sure why you'd get that relocation error at
runtime. Do you have any other OpenGL or Mesa programs on that machine?
VMD uses libGLU for its sphere generation code and OpenGL query routines.
Is it possible that your libGLU is not the same one that originally
came with your Linux distribution? I've never seen anyone encounter
this particular problem before, even with the latest and greatest Linux
distros. Can you find out what RPM it came from?
