John,
Just wanted to update you on this "CUDA error". Per your suggestions to
check the SDK examples, I ran a few. I had compiled them earlier, and
since they compiled with no errors, and executed--I didn't check the
output. Turns out, the card was not being utilized correctly.

Bottomline: updated system software, re-installed the CUDA NVIDIA driver
(190.18) and no more errors
