have a look at http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/alpha/

you have to create a biocore account for yourself and then
join the "VMD (Public)" project. in the BioFS section of
this project webpage, you can find the latest alpha packages.
you can even mount the BioFS directly as filesystem via
WebDAV through the MacOSX GUI and then have a transparent
install from the biofs directly.

it runs very nicely on mac hardware... ;-)

...and i'm having much less trouble with linux,
than my colleagues have with their macs, which then
tends to magically turn into my problem every once
