Marc,
  Try running Tachyon with the added flag: "-normalfixup guess" and
let me know if you still encounter this problem. I'm actually surprised
that you got this behavior with VMD 1.8.6 and Tachyon 0.98, this should
only occur when using older versions of VMD (e.g. 1.8.5 or older)
with the newer Tachyon, or newer versions of VMD with the older Tachyon.
Can you double check that the version numbers you mention are correct?
