You could replace the msms binary with a shell that logs something to
a file and then executes the real msms binary to see that VMD actually
calls what you think it should call...

While VMD is trying to connect to the msms binary you can also run
_as root_ the command:

netstat --inet -nap

which will show you all the connections, including daemons (which is
how msms should look like). This can show you that the msms binary is
running and that it is actually accepting connections on the port that
VMD tries to connect to.

Another issue might be that you have iptables/netfilter activated on
your computer and this restricts TCP/IP connections. You can try to
deactivate temporarily the firewall to see if this is indeed the
problem (if you want to feel safe, then you can disconnect from
whatever kind of network you might have at home before deactivating
the firewall).
