Vlad,
  It works for me here with VMD 1.8.3 and 1.8.4, the issue seems to be
the way the Python interpreter is binding the Tk libraries. All of the
error messages people are getting seem to indicate that Python is trying
to dynamically load the Tk library at runtime, which is causing problems
since the version on any individual workstation may not be the same as
the one VMD's Python interpreter was compiled against. This seems to
be most problematic on Linux and MacOS X where there are differing
versions of these libraries floating around. I'm going to see if there's
a way I can force these to statically link against the same Tk that VMD
itself is linked against, thus eliminating runtime problems like these.
