Adrian,
  The near/far clipping planes cannot be disabled (OpenGL requires them)
but you can set the near clip plane distance to nearly zero, and the far
clip plane distance to a very large number, which is as good as one can
hope for. The reason they cannot be disabled is because the OpenGL
clipping planes are what determines the precision of the Z-buffer
used for hidden surface determination. You could make the near plane
zero and the far plane a huge number, but this will reduce the depth
buffer precision substantially. It's a trade off. You can change
the default near/far clip plane settings in VMD using the
Graphics->Display Settings window, or with the "display" text command.
