Hi Praedor, VMD-L,
I've built a new test version of VMD 1.8.4 which goes much farther to
limit itself to the simplest possible OpenGL 1.0 immediate mode graphics
commands when the VMDSIMPLEGRAPHICS mode is set.
I've posted the latest test builds here:
  http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/alpha/

Try installing this test version and let me know if it is now able
to run on your ATI chipset or not when you set the VMDSIMPLEGRAPHICS
environment variable to 1. If it still has problems, I'll need
more debugging info from you, but I'm hoping that with this very
minimalistic code you'll be able to run without crashing now.

Let us know how it works for you.
