Are you using windows or linux?
if linux you may not have the x windowing configured optimally.

See if you have the following in your XFree86.config file

Section "Module"
        Load "dbe"
        Load "extmod"
        Load "fbdevhw"
        Load "glx"
        Load "record"
        Load "freetype"
        Load "type1"
EndSection

Section "DRI"
        Group 0
        Mode 0666
EndSection
