Hi,
  The ATI Linux driver should work with your 9800, and will solve
the speed problems you're having, but you'll need to disable some of the
VMD features to prevent a driver bug from crashing the program by running
this command prior to running VMD:
  setenv VMDSIMPLEGRAPHICS 1
