I've been running 1.8.3 & 1.8.2 on a powerbook G4 with the 10.3.8
upgrade with no problem (of that kind). Have you tried deleting vmd and
installing a clean copy? Or running lsregister -- maybe your application
database is corrupted:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister
-kill -r /
