Paul,
  I see the problem you're having. The startup messages from
both VMD 1.8.2, and 1.8.3 indicate that you have no hardware OpenGL
acceleration, and that your system is using the Mesa software renderer.
Your VMD 1.8.2 version is indicating that your driver is saying that it
will not perform 3-D texturing (0x0x0 max resolution). The VMD 1.8.2 code
had a bug that didn't prevent it from trying to do 3-D texturing in this
specific case. VMD 1.8.3 is correctly catching this and disabling 3-D
texturing, which is why your machine won't display the VolumeSlice rep
with the new version. The issue here is that your video driver is reporting
a maximum 3-D texture map size of 0x0x0. If you install a better OpenGL
driver, VMD 1.8.3 should work fine on that ATI 9000 chipset, but the
Mesa software renderer won't work correctly for this.
