Dear VMD-L,
I'm happy to announce that the second public alpha version
of VMD 1.4 for Windows is available at the VMD web site under
the VMD 1.4 specific web pages:
  http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/vmd-1.4/

This second alpha release includes a lot of functionality
that was missing in the previous alpha release, as well as
numerous bug fixes. There are also many code changes which
should have no visible effect on the behavior of the program,
but need more testing before becoming a final release.

Features new in this Windows alpha 2 release include:
 - Support for Surf
 - Support for Stride (which enables the cartoon
   representation to work correctly)
 - Support for Babel (which allows reading many molecular
   file formats beyond what
 - only asks for a 16-bit Z-buffer, so it should have
higher performance on software based OpenGL implementations,
and will have a better chance of getting hardware accelerated
on most commonly available PC graphics boards.

Major bugs that still need to be fixed:
 - FLTK gui on windows -- none of the text input fields work
correctly yet, this is being addressed currently by the
VMD developers with help from the FLTK authors.

 - Keyboard and mouse handling in the graphics window is
still incomplete, as is handling of window resize events.
This will be finished up for the next public release.

This version of VMD should run on Windows 95/98/NT machines
that have the OpenGL libraries installed (NT always includes
the OpenGL libraries, for 95/98 you may need to download them
and install them as they are optional components. For
Windows 95, you will also have to download and install
Winsock2 in order to run VMD. All of these are downloadable
from the VMD web site at present.)

Please report installation problems and/or bugs that are
not already listed on the VMD 1.4a2 release notes page:
   http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/vmd-1.4/relnotes.html

We will be updating the release notes page with further
detail as time goes on. When reporting bugs, please give
as much relevant information as possible about the version
of windows your running, what service packs (if any) you
have installed, and the sequence of commands/operations in
VMD that causes trouble.

All bug reports, installation problems and/or general questions
should be emailed to: vmd_at_ks.uiuc.edu

Thanks for using VMD!!
