Lorenzo,
  It sounds to me like NVidia broke their drivers, this isn't the first time
such things have happened. You're using the NVidia-supplied drivers right?
The 1.8.3a7 version you were using, was it the 64-bit Athlon64/Opteron build,
or was it the standard Linux version?
