I investigated these "could be" Open GL issues : I compiled a simple version of
vmd with
LINUX MESA TK TCL
(Mesa 6.0.1, tcl/tk 8.4)

AND I run it with the -dispdev none option (I really don't want graphics !)

and the same problem occurs (the console windows with pretending "Starting text
interpreter", but nothing more).

It is still stuck in a select call. :

gdb sees :

#0 0x420e19ee in select () from /lib/i686/libc.so.6
#1 0x4213030c in __DTOR_END__ () from /lib/i686/libc.so.6

Do you have any clue on this ?

The glibc is glibc-2.2.5-42
