Peter,
  You'll want to see if there are errors in /sw/bin/init.csh
as it could be a problem in the Fink initialization script that is
interfering with VMD's startup, since you probably want to be able to
use the software installed by Fink, it would be worth looking into a
little more. Its probably something simple. Thanks for following up
on this, it'll help the next person that runs into trouble.
