  If you'd like to setup a 64-bit VMD for Athlon64, I have test binaries
of VMD 1.8.3 available here:
  ftp://ftp.ks.uiuc.edu/pub/mdscope/vmd/alpha/

Download the linuxamd64 version and let me know how it works for you.
