Luis,
  This just came up with a few other people recently as well,
the problem is that you're using a broken video driver that ships
with XFree86 by default. If you install the ATI-provided video
driver (get it from their web site), your problem should go away.
I've had good luck with the ATI 3.2.7 drivers.
