Hi Patrick,
  The up/down/left/right arrows serve no purpose in VMD's built-in
text console at the present time. In fact, the original Unix csh/sh
shells also did not utilize them, only newer shells such as tcsh etc
have the terminal I/O code to handle arrow-driven command history etc.
You can access command history in the VMD console with !XXX where XXX is
the command number, and you can see the history with 'history' much like
you would in csh/tcsh. If you sorely miss the arrow keys, you may want
to try TkCon, though I have to warn you that TkCon has its own issues
here and there (it implements some commands that conflict with other
VMD plugins, one of which is psfgen..).
