Thank you! FLTK appears to be the problem.
I installed the fltk1.1-games binaries, and the same menu problem
appears in "FLTK Sudoku". I tried this on two ubuntu 10.10 computers
(very different hardware), and saw the same behaviour. (After VMD, I
did not have the stamina to attempt compiling FLTK.)

As for compiling vmd on ubunt, it was tricky. I got most of the the
way through the build process. I'm happy to share the last remaining
compile error I've been having, if anyone is curious. However, as the
problem appears to be with FLTK, I think I'll spare you all.
