Hi,
Either your system is running out of memory, or this is likely a flaw
in your graphics driver, or a hardware fault of some kind. It should
not normally be possible for any application to cause the entire
machine to freeze up. If you're running the machine low on memory then
you would begin seeing your system start paging and/or swapping, but you
can observe this by running the "top" command and seeing how much memory
is free. Although you mention that you have 4GB of memory, how much of
that memory is actually available when you start VMD?

Cheers,
