Tom,
  I'm quite puzzled about your display mode being set to a non-truecolor
visual. Can you email me the output from the command "glxinfo", and
from "cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version" ? That should give me the
information I need. Oh, and as Axel mentioned previously, it'd be
helpful to upgrade to the released version of VMD 1.8.7.
