Hi,
  Indeed, a little googling seems to indicate that SCIM has known
problems with Tcl/Tk and Python/tkInter of various versions.
A few of the discussions I found seem to indicate that this may be
fixed in the new Tcl/Tk 8.5.x release, which I'm about 50% of the
way done building on all of the VMD platforms. I could probably
get you an alpha test build of VMD 1.8.7 based on the new Tcl/Tk 8.5.x
for you to test on your system. If that interests you, I could
probably have that working by middle of next week.
