Dear Stephane,
  There's a brief description of the perspective projection
method used by VMD in the User's guide. Depending on what you
intend to do, it can be a bit tricky to make a 100% matching
projection in other renderers, but it can be done with some
attention to details. The orthographic projection used in VMD
is not documented (at least I don't recall that it is, but it is
quite simple) so if you need that too, please let me know.
I assume you're not concerned with stereo projections?
