To which I so humbly replied:

Well sort of except I was answering the same result from a different
situation. :) That being that the tar file was extracted by root in
the first place.

Still, the files extracted from the tar file will be owned by the
regular user who ran tar, but the "make install" uses "cp" to copy the
executables, but uses "tar" to copy the scripts and plugin directories.
So the file ownership for those directories will be maintained during
the installation process, while the files that are copied with "cp" will
change to the root owner that did the "make install."

I hope that is clear enough and maybe I've got it straight now...
