Maybe you do not have the vmd executible located in your /usr/local/bin directory. Also you may be running the wrong executible. I'm not sure where yours is, but mine is: /Applications/VMD.1.8.6/Contents/MacOS/VMDLauncher
This is a shell script which does a couple of things including running the following program: /Applications/VMD.1.8.6/Contents/vmd/vmd_MACOSXX86 It looks like you are trying to run your vmd_LINUX executible directly and it's giving you trouble. Try finding the scriptfile which runs it for you.
