Hi,
The "convert" command on your machine is not the proper program.
VMD expects that "convert" will run the "convert" command that's
packaged as part of the ImageMagick image/movie conversion toolkit.
The ImageMagick "convert" command produces this output if you run
it with no arguments:

johns_at_dallas{64} convert
Version: ImageMagick 6.0.7 08/16/06 Q16 http://www.imagemagick.org
Copyright: Copyright (C) 1999-2004 ImageMagick Studio LLC

Usage: convert [options ...] file [ [options ...] file ...] [options ...] file

.... lots of output that goes on for about 3 pages...
.... lots of output that goes on for about 3 pages...
.... lots of output that goes on for about 3 pages...

If you get the correct "convert" command install, your problems should
go away.
