  I'm going to have to look into this more closely, but the short
answer is that VMD doesn't work with cyclic structures presently.
(this came up a few months ago but we haven't had time to do anything
 about it yet)

In the specific case of the 2B38 structure you mentoin, the structure
analyzer in VMD dislikes it so much it isn't even accepting it as a
valid protein, which eliminates it from consideration for the
various Cartoon/Tube/Ribbon representations. I hope that with a few
small changes I can add support for these structures, but I don't
think I can do it before this version goes out because there's a
risk I'll create new bugs that'll cause other problems and I won't
have time to test as thoroughly as would be needed to add this before
VMD 1.8.4 is released. That being said, if I can come up with a
hack/fix for this, I would be happy to make you a special binary or
provide the diff so you can build your own so that you can get work
done until a fix makes its way into the main source code.

I hope to have chance to bang in this for you soon, but it may be
another week or so before I can do it.
