Hi,
The January 2006 update is almost the same as the July 2005 update
for VMD 1.8.3, except that the new webpdb plugin is newer. Starting
in about August, the plugin interfaces were changed significantly to
support the many new structure building plugins which are part of
the VMD 1.8.4 test versions and will be in the final release. These new
structure building tools cannot be used with VMD 1.8.3 because they depend
on these changes to both the plugin interface and to the core parts of
VMD. If you wish to try out the new plugins, I'd suggest downloading
the latest test version of VMD 1.8.4, as it includes all of this.
Let me know if you have more questions about this.
