i second this, nvidia is much easier to get running.

in my case (amd64, debian linux) radeon runs also fine after some hassle
and with older version of the driver - newest versions just crash
xfree86/xorg after a mouse/keyboard input - but it might be something on
my side...

not exactly this type, i have pci-e x600 with 128mb of ram and vmd runs
fine. however, i get

OpenGL renderer: READEON X600 PRO Generic
Features: STENCIL RN MTX PS GLSL(VF)
GLSL rendering mode is NOT available

so something is not running properly. the question is whether you need
GLSL rendering and whether this applies also to your card type...
