Hi,
  Can you provide me with an example image that illustrates
the "scratches" you're describing? Which version of POV-Ray
are you running? If you can show me what it looks like, I may
be able to figure out what's going on. It's possibly a bug in
POV-Ray or an issue with floating point precision from the sound
of it, but I'll wait until I see the image before making a firm
judgement on what it is...
