Hi,
  I assume you meant that you want to load a '.vmd' file, not '.vmf'.
I don't know what a '.vmf' file is, so I'll tell you the answer for .vmd. :)
To load a .vmd file, you can either do this in the VMD text console:
  source filename.vmd

or, you can use the File->Load State menu item to load a .vmd file.
