Hi,
  VMD 1.8.3 works fine on my FC 4 machine. I seem to remember I had
problems with previous versions because I didn't have the openGL drivers
for my graphics card. I'm using an NVidia GeForce 2 card, and with the
default installed driver (nv in /etc/X11/xorg.conf), VMD 1.8.2 didn't
work, even though MesaGL was supposed to be installed.
  When you start up VMD, do you get an xterm type window for a few
seconds, then it dies. This is what I used to get. Anyway, installing
proper graphics drivers fixed the problem.
