Why do you need the 'LINUX' parameter ?

I usually do :

tar -zxvf vmd-1.8.3.bin.LINUX.opengl.tar.gz

cd vmd-1.8.3

./configure

cd src

make install

Then it should work ok.

To try debugging it (in case it does not work), try launching vmd in a
console :

vmd -dispdev text
