Hi Vlad,
Here's a script for rendering the color scale as a color bar in VMD:

About 3-D texturing in Tachyon etc:
None of the external renderers are capable of rendering
3-D texture mapped surfaces yet. While I had hoped to have time to
add this to Tachyon, I just had too many other things cooking and there
was no way to get it done without holding everything else up. VMD emits
a warning message in the VMD text console when you try to render surfaces
that use the volume coloring feature by the way. I do plan to address
this for the next release. I hope to make the next release on a much
shorter time frame, as it will consist mostly of updates to plugins,
extensions to the molfile plugin interface, "render" interface improvements
(Tachyon, POV-Ray, etc), and very likely some more OpenGL Shading Language
work.
