Dan,
Since the two tests that Axel asked you to perform were successfull,
I'm starting to believe that the actual source of problems is your .cshrc
and other associated startup files. I've seen _many_ MacOS X installations
of VMD unable to start because a user has a .cshrc file that contains the
line:
  source .alias

Seems harmless, except that it's not a fully qualified path, and so if you
run VMD from any directory other than one that contains .alias, the user's
startup scripts bomb, preventing VMD from being spawned with a terminal
window for the text console. This same type of thing can also occur on
Linux, and any of the commercial Unix versions out there. I'd double check
your login files and make sure there's not something bombing there.
