Paul,
  The first error returned by glxinfo indicates that you don't
really have a workable OpenGL installation on that machine:
  Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".

I'd suggest that you go to the NVidia web site and download
their OpenGL driver and install it according to their instructions.
I believe this will solve your problems. It is important that
you follow their directions carefully, don't forget to fix the
X configuration file as they instruct.
