For anybody who wants to have a solution to this problem, I propose to
apply the attached patch to

  $VMDDIR/bin/vmd

After it is used, "vmd" will not start when you have a file ".vmdrc" in the
current directory, unless it is your home directory or you have given the
option "-force".
