Matt,
  How many walls does your CAVE have? Is it actually a CAVE, or is
it an Immersadesk or a large wall type display? What does your .caverc
file contain? The default projection used in VMD works well for the
10'x10'x10' CAVE at NCSA, but you may have to use a custom .caverc file
if you're using an Immersadesk or some other viewing configuration that
isn't a cube. (or if it has a vastly different coordinate system from the
NCSA CAVE...)

Nothing has been change /wrt the CAVE code in VMD 1.8.2, so there'd be
no reason to upgrade unless you want other non-CAVE-related bug fixes
and features.
