Hi Lucas,
I'm having exactly the same problem with a FireGL 8800 board and ATI's latest
drivers, on a 2.4.21 kernel. Until now, I have no solution. To use VMD I
don't need to use another driver, but I have to switch off 3d acceleration
(by adding Option "no_accel" "yes" in the board's "Device" section in
XF86Config-4).
The next thing I'm going to do is buy an NVIDIA card, and stick this one in a
Windows machine. I'm afraid this won't work for your laptop...
