Ioana,
  I didn't intend for you to run them separately (i.e. outside of VMD)
but rather than have you select the MPEG conversion mode in the 'vmdmovie'
script that uses the NetPBM 'ppmtompeg' program rather than the
SGI 'dmconvert' program that you've been having trouble with.
You should be able to select the 'ppmtompeg' option in the vmdmovie
plugin and use your installation of NetPBM, assuming that you're using
a recent enough version of NetPBM that it includes a working ppmtompeg.
(some older versions had various problems..) Just make sure to select
Format->"MPEG (ppmtompeg)" in the vmdmovie plugin, and it should "just work".
