Ioana,
  You should be able to compile/install the NetPBM and ImageMagick
packages on your machine and use them to compress the movie into MPEG
format. This should work, independent of the problem you encountered
with 'dmconvert' on your SGI. See the "software requirements" section
of the 'vmdmovie' plugin documentation page:
  http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/plugins/vmdmovie/
