  If you want Python support, you will need to compile VMD from
the source code. Get the source distribution for this, as the binary
distribution you have been trying up to this point does not contain any
source code. To compile from source, you should follow the guidance here:
  http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/doxygen/compiling.html#compiling
