I found out what was causing the segmentation fault (from a very broad perspective anyway). It seems the CUDA version of VMD isn't particularly happy with my system, so I switched to the regular OpenGL version of VMD.

I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.4, and have an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT graphics card, if that helps.

The other problem, i.e., the "weird error message on quit", has not been solved by the...across-grade.
