Hi,
  So did /usr/local/bin/vmd get installed or not?
It's unclear from your email what the results were. You don't
necessarily need Surf in order to use VMD. I presume you're running
VMD on a server of some sort rather than a desktop since this is a
PowerPC 64 build, yes? Or is your machine actually an x86?
(in which case you have downloaded and installed the wrong version)
