Hi,

since recently we have a workstation with a stereo capable nvidia graphics
card (Quadro4 900 XGL) and shutter glasses. As there were some particularities
about setting this up properly, I thought I share the important things.
BTW, this is mainly based on advice from Andy Ritger (nvidia) and John Stone.

- there are some performance/stability problems, in particular with dual
athlons. Make sure to upgrade to the *very* latest nvidia drivers (>=4349)

- if you have flickering problems, note that default video modes are quite
bad for stereo. Ideally you'd like 120 Hz vertical refresh. We now use the
following modes, which significantly reduce flickering (NB: make sure your
monitor supports those ! *no warranty*)

  # 1600x1200 @ 111.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 141.97 kHz; pclk: 315.74 MHz
    Modeline "1600x1200_111" 315.74 1600 1736 1912 2224 1200 1201 1204 1279 -HSync +Vsync
  # 1280x1024 @ 120.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 131.64 kHz; pclk: 233.79 MHz
    Modeline "1280x1024_120" 233.79 1280 1384 1528 1776 1024 1025 1028 1097 -HSync +Vsync
  # 1024x768 @ 120.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 98.76 kHz; pclk: 139.05 MHz
    Modeline "1024x768_120" 139.05 1024 1104 1216 1408 768 769 772 823 -HSync +Vsync

- to workaround performance drops in monoscopic display, use stereo with
zero eyesep in that case (has already been mentioned on this list previously)

- the antialiasing related environment variable __GL_FSAA_MODE is incompatible
with the stereo mode. Make sure you don't set it, or your display will be
  very bizarre.

- last but not least, if you can afford it, it seems that the Quadro FX series
has fewer stereo related quirks (but it costs about double :)) ..

Cheers,
  Marc Baaden
