Lubos,
  Let me try eliminating the /dev/tty stuff from the msms command,
there's a reason we had to use this, but I have to admit that
it has slipped my mind since its been setup that way for so many
years. If it works acceptably without /dev/tty, then I can modify
the VMD source to avoid doing it that way.
